What is it?
How was it started? Why is is important?

The Food Plate first started out as the Food Pyramid which was introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture 1992. The Food Pyramid was updated in 2005 and replaced by The Food Plate in 2011.
The importance of the Food Plate is that it helps in many ways to make you have a healthier life. The Food Plate reduces the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, cancer, etc. It also helps in maintaining a healthy weight, and balancing the amount of things you eat.

The food plate helps you keep a healthy diet! A healthy diet is made up from a variety and balance of different foods and drinks.
The food plate has many benefits about it. One of the biggest benefit it has is that it helps you maintain a moderated intake of all the food groups. By having a healthy diet it reduces disease risks you may encounter throughout your life. There was a case about a 60 year old man that had severe chest pains. He declined both drug therapy and invasive testing, so the only solution to his problem was changing his diet. The man adapted a whole-food plant-based diet, which consisted primarily of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, potatoes, beans, legumes, and nuts. After adapting to this diet, his chest pains began to diminish, his blood pressure and cholesterol became to improve, and also his weight improved. Before changing his diet, he wasn't able to run without having chest pains, and after the change in diet he was able to jog more than 4 miles without chest pains. The 60 year old man stopped having chest pains after changing his diet into one that was more moderated and didn't have a lot of protein... it was more focused on vegetables and fruits.

We can make a commitment to promote vegetables and fruits and whole grains on every part of every menu. We can make portion sizes smaller and emphasize quality over quantity. And we can help create a culture - imagine this - where our kids ask for healthy options instead of resisting them. |

In a survey made at ASFM we asked teenagers age 15-16 about the food plate. This survey was made to inform us about the knowledge of healthy habits. We sent this survey to 26 students and this were the results we got. Most of the students thought that the largest food group in the food plate was protein, but in reality it should be vegetables.
